I have a good friend who always encouraged me to test Linux. But it was watching your videos that I became interested in testing cachyos, so I did it for a while I only have knowledge of WSL with Ubuntu because I'm a programmer, but really switching to the Linux desktop has a difference. The cachyos I liked but I faced some problems, so I decided to test the manjaro and I have liked it a lot because everything just worked and to my surprise the nvidia driver was already the 550.90 instead of the 550.52 of the cachyos. But I'm still here thinking about testing even cachyos itself again or endeavoursOS. As a Windows user for at least 30 years, I have been positively surprised by Linux, which has been my main OS for two weeks now. Another detail I also tested Linux Mint and popOs, but I didn't like the initial experience it seems that the Linux arch based ditros work much better

I fully switched to Linux like 3 years ago, cause I got sick of M$ shit like telemetry and crappy updating cycles. I immediately started learning Arch (although I started with forks), I really like the philosophy of this distro. Mint and other "most convenient" distributions seemed to me to be "too easy to learn". So I jumped headlong into hardcore, lol (yes, yes, I know about Gentoo and LFS, but I'm not that masochistic). It was a little hard at first, but I'm a pretty stubborn person and over time (a few months) I felt incredibly free compared to Windows. Also I had a pretty crappy setup by the standards of the community - Intel + NVIDIA, but surprisingly everything worked right out of the box. BUT. It is important to understand that I have always used laptops, not desktop PCs. For laptops, Linux support has always been more flexible. I've tried Plasma and GNOME, figured out how they work and are customized (they're both pretty good btw). I've been using Hyprland for the last few months, and now I can't even think of using something else. I still have debloated with scripts Windows 10 installed as a second system, but I boot into it once a week to play one or two online games that don't work on Linux. I've been playing all the other games on Linux for a long time and everything works great. By the way, every time I boot into Windows now it feels like going back to prison. In general, I advise everyone to switch to Linux, unless of course you want to be a puppet of M$. It won't be easy in the beginning, but you'll have your own operating system that doesn't spy on you, not a piece of shit rented from a megacorporation.

Quick note for those with a AMD GPU who get the "Unsupported GPU Processing Mode", you need to install the "Mesa-libOpenCL" package via zypper. This fixed this pop up and I was able to use the program after relaunching. Amazing video btw! Really saved me hours of fixing the issues myself!

*Mint chores: Switch on Timeshift. Allow automatic updates. Still take monthly backups of your personal files. When there is a new version available do a clean new install. Arch chores: install system backup facility, configure it, figure out where important system files are, do not switch on automatic updates on system, take personal files backups everytime you install something new. When there's a major update on OS important files, and you have to know what they are, what they do and where they are, you backup them and try the new versions one by one. Pray nothing gets permanently broken.

I haven't made the jump just yet, but considering how much I dislike Win11 and... Recall....and how even though they're making it OptIn, Im sure it'll magically be OptOut after an update or two, Im heavily considering it. I do have some Linux experience though having run a Proxmox server with a few Ubuntu based VMs for a while, and running FreeNas/TrueNas years prior to that. Also for work Ive messed with Debian, Fedora, and CentOS for a bit, and I have a Steam Deck and make frequent use of Desktop mode there. Likely the distro of choice will be Nobara. So far, I dont see many games I play that wouldnt be compatible, however I still need to take a hardware survey to make sure everything is Linux capable. Ive seen a few reports that the have been able to get Photoshop to work (not sure all that is involved), but Im not planning to use this system for production at all. However, I unfortunately wont be able to completely remove myself from Windows across all my systems at home as my music production system relies heavily on it. Even if I switched to something like Reaper, I still need to take stock on my plugins, and further still, if my audio interface has Linux drivers. What started this conversation other than Window's shenanigans is the fact my main drive is running on an old 128G NVME and I have a spare 2TB NVME just sitting there. The question is, do I want to install Windows on it, or make the jump to Linux finally. In the end, I don't see myself headed towards Windows in the future, so the switch is bound to happen. When that switch will happen is the big question.

I run Zorin free ver & yes it’s a older kernel . I found Wi-Fi had a problem with Broadcom & Qualcomm cards used in thousands of laptops . You will need terminal but when looking for info go by date . Wine works but sometimes it just stops working & it’s almost a impossible fix . ( I just use Bottles ) Zorin is a locked down OS . It will remove non-standard apps or drivers , or it can just gets ignored . I have seen it install programs & refuse to run it . It can remove your nice new working add-on , mod , driver or program . If your lucky with hardware & you just need a browser , e mail & video it’s a good OS . But software is not the OS Zorin upgrading free OS is a horrid experience ! Bit banging for 2 days & it falls over ( in 2024 ) . System recovered with timeshift ……. ( In 3 years i haven't totally killed it ) . Ps You can up date the kernel with “Mainline” . But lock in the old kernel . Kernel 6.1 had problems with SD cards , USB devices Also the standard set of congestion control's may not be included !

What I would suggest is if moving to Linux and you have to have some apps and programs that are not feasible to use on Linux, I would suggest that you keep a Windows system just for them and still switch to linux on another system as your main daily driver when home so you can learn it, get use to operating and using what Linux has to offer. Many Jobs and Businesses require you to use Windows and some of those Programs and apps. And I find Zorin or Mint great for new users. Zorin gives a more windows like interface that a windows user will find useful as they learn linux and what it has to offer. It's based off of Ubuntu and Zorin also has a paid version that's for Real time support " of which I have used and they do respond quite quickly to what I needed and even a suggestion I gave them which is i n the Documentation which they did do. And they have the free versions and the community and forums and all the Docs a person might need to. And I have used those also. Until people learn that they can make Linux how ever they want. And that Linux is just a kernel and it's what's hooked into the kernel that Makes a distro what it is. " That they themselves if they want to, can make Linux whatever they want themselves " Even create their very own Distro or Version "Fork " of Linux if they want. And enjoy the privacy that Linux will and does provide. It is considerably more secure than windows but security " Has to be Learned " no matter what OS you use even on Linux it is just better secured. It's generally the operator in Linux that can kill there own security. It doesn't need a lot like windows to run, in general depending on the Distro or fork that you install and on the hardware. And even Gaming has come a long long way. Still some humps to over come but Steam has join the fray and that really helps on the gaming side of things. As Linux gets more market share and use, then Dev's of games and other software will start looking at this to, and start making their software even more compatible. This will bring Linux even more into the forefront as a Viable Operating system for a lot of people. Why do you think Microsoft dislikes linux so much, they see the potential of the OS and what it can do. And have since the 90's they hated Linux with a passion. And you can thank all those Geeks and Nerds out there for making it what it is today. Even Nvidia sees what's on the Blackboard. I say this not to dispute you but to say there's more then one great Version or Distro to start Linux with. The thing most people from Windows don't get is they have " Options " that Windows just doesn't or will ever provide. And once Microsoft moves over to subscription service. Their will be a lot of people really looking into Linux. Microsoft only cares about it's bottom line not the people that even make that possible. To Microsoft, you are just a product to be used. Nothing more.

Thank you for all the videos A1R. I've finally made the switch to Linux this week. After some testing on the laptops, ended up in Linux Mint for now. Everyhthing works, reminds me a bit of windows (which I have been using exclusively since 1998). Since now I only play CS2 so far even the performance is good. The only downside Im having is likely with CS2 servers and some lag.
